Carter High School winning football program started with Joe Rust, Mike Baker, Danny Davis, Patrick Martin, O.C Jackson and Skip Jefferson. Dallas Carter has a very competitive American football program. Playing in the highest classification in Texas high school football, The Carter Cowboys reached the state semifinals in 1971, 1974, 1982, 1990 and 1992 but did not make the final game until 1988.
That year, Dallas Carter had one of the most talented high school football teams ever assembled, equipped with a defense featuring defensive tackle Derrick Cherry, linebackers Jessie Armstead, and Le'Shai Maston, defensive backs Clifton Abraham, and Derric Evans. Guided by legendary coach Freddie James, the Carter Cowboys won the 1988 5A -state championship with a 31-14 win over Converse Judson.
The Carter Cowboys football program has produced 25 NFL players in which 21 of them played more than one year. Their are four active Carter Cowboys playing in the National Football League during the 2013 season.
David W Carter High School first coach was Coach Kedric Couch who was the head coach from 1967 to 1975. In 1973 he was named Coach of The Year. The second head coach for David W Carter High School was Jack Keck from 1976 to 1981. In 1976 Coach Keck was name Coach of The Year. Coach Freddie James was the third head coach of The Carter Cowboys football program from 1982 to 1995. He lead The Carter Cowboys to the 1982 Texas 5A Semi-Finals to finish second in the state. In 1988 he lead the Cowboys to the Texas 5A State Championship game where the Cowboys won their first state championship
Coach Bruce Chambers would be the fourth head coach for The Carter Cowboys from 1995 to 1997 making the playoffs each year. Linus Walton would become the head coach from 1998 to 1999 after Coach Chambers. In the year 2000, David W Carter High School would hire an interim coach to step in and try and keep the Cowboy legacy alive. It wasn't till 2002 when Allen Wilson was hired that Carter made a run at the playoffs once again. He would coach from 2002 to 2011.
In 2011 Patrick "Pacman" Willams would return to The Carter Cowboys football program as head coach. Their has not been a head coach at Carter that played & graduated from the school since Coach Chambers. In his first season as head coach he would only win three games. In his second season Coach Williams Cowboys won 8 games. The 2013 season the Cowboys are off to a (4-0) run.
